Friday favorites: Rainforest landscape

barrocolorado_2012_09_23In the tropics, trees don’t always have synchronized seasons of leaf growth, flowering, and leaf drop because there is no cold winter to synchronize them. In rainforests like this one in Panama, the trees across a landscape can simultaneously be in bloom, in full leaf, or barren of leaves. We don’t yet have a good understanding of tropical tree phenology, which is why this PhenoCam at Barro Colorado Island and others like it are so important.

About Margaret Kosmala

I am an ecologist exploring the complex dynamics of plant and animal systems. I am especially interested in understanding how species communities change over time and how humans impact them.
